Telescopic, portable and concealed fishing Rods buying guide

Fishing locations hard to access or with very limited space is always a problem. Transportation, traveling, a constant issue for the avid fisherman. While saltwater fishing will seldom need smaller rods, fresh water lakes and ponds often pose a problem. A long fishing rod never helps, well at least not in this case. It is easy to pack away all of your gear in your favorite backpack, fishing vest or tackle box, but the same cannot be traditionally said about a fishing rod.
Of course, a 2 piece rod makes it easy for transportation, and even for access sometimes, however, when space is limited, and branches, weeds are all around you, you will need something even smaller to fish with.
One solution is a collapsible fishing rod, known as a telescoping rod. This is an excellent choice for its portability, and even though it is small enough to carry to most places, it may still give you the length you may need to cast as far as possible.

Thoughts and things to consider on portable and telescopic fishing rods
Portability – Duh!
This is the obvious reason for purchasing a small fishing rod, either for yourself or as a gift for the fisherman in your family / life, or yourself of course. Whether fishing a remote location, where traveling is an issue, or a small area, where casting is difficult, or even a place where you should not be fishing (where no one can see your fishing pole), you should look for the size that would work for your needs. “One-piece” telescopic models are great while multiple pieces and one piece also work well and make transportation a breeze.
Power
Telescoping rods, but not necessarily pen or portable rods are rated according to weight. Usually this rating will be something like “light”, “medium” or “heavy”. It is important to note that you should not expect the same power or strength from telescoping rods as you should from one piece or 2 piece fishing poles. Anglers should mostly target smaller fish, panfish etc with these.
Action
Action or flex rate is measured by how quickly a rod returns to its original position after a fish has been hooked. Mostly, like the Power or weight, you cannot expect the same as one or 2 piece rods, but you can get very good results by choosing the right gear.
Tips
Always wash rod and reel after usage in saltwater, in special the individual blank connections. It may be tempting to use a lubricant, but doing so will increase the chance of an accidental collapse when fishing.
When buying, make sure you are selecting a fishing rod compatible with the species of fish you are targeting.
Purchase a fishing pole that will have a comfortable handle / grip. Lightweight materials such as cork or Eva foams are what’s mostly available and they work great.
Make sure blanks fit well, are sturdy, stay in place and without any extra friction before buying.
Construction materials
Most telescoping and pen fishing rods are manufactured the way 1 or 2 piece rods are nowadays using the same or similar materials, unlike the children fishing rods we use to see in the past. Common materials such as graphite, carbon fiber and fiber glass are usually seen, as is the occasional bamboo.
Final thoughts
Should you buy a telescoping, or a hidden fishing rod?
Everyone should have one. Whether for fishing somewhere hard to get to, or if you don’t want people to know you;re fishing, for whatever reason, having something that can be concealed, easily transported is a must, in special if you’re traveling.
Are telescoping fishing rods made with good quality?
They are much better than they used to be. Don’t expect the same action, or durability from one or 2 piece fishing rods however.
